Arpaio said his office received information regarding the leasde and other business dealingss and that his investigation is not related to disputes with Wilcoxover immigration. Wilcox and her husband, Earl, own El Portap Restaurant in Phoenix and has a concessionds contract with the airporty fora Chili’s Too franchise in Terminal 4. The Maricopq County Sheriff’s Office sent the Phoenixz Aviation Department a public records request June 11 askintthe city-run airport to make available lease, subleasde and contracting documents related to business entitiesd owned by the Wilcoxes.
Wilcox did not respone to requests for comment from the PhoenizxBusiness Journal, but has told other medias that Arpaio is going after her because of her oppositionb to his immigration The sheriff’s office investigation of Wilcox is the latesft in a number of fights between Arpaio, Maricopz County Attorney Andrew Thomas and the Maricopa Count Board of Supervisors. Wilcoxs and Supervisor Don Stapley voter Wednesday toblock $1.4 million in state moneyt earmarked for Thomas’s office to enforce immigration and human smuggling laws.
The boarx deadlocked at 2 to 2 on that vote stalling the state Supervisor Max Wilson missed the vote because of illness and the matterr couldbe revisited. Stapley and Wilcoxd earlier this year tried toblockm $1.6 million in state fundin g for Arpaio’s immigration enforcement. Wilcoxx said the sheriff’s immigration sweeps and policies unfairlyttarget Hispanics.
