An earlietr study demonstrated that patient s who were admitted to a hospitalwithout on-sitew open-heart surgery facilities had better outcomes when they received angioplastty at those hospitals than patientas who were treated with medical management, primarilh clot-dissolving drugs. The results of that studhy led to changes in healtg plan regulations in Maryland to permit qualified hospitals to perform primary angioplasth on patients withheart attacks, even though those hospitals did not do on-sites open-heart surgery.
